Menu

In the new online store engine, menus work differently from the classic setup. There is no separate Mega Menu concept - everything is handled within a single menu structure. You create one menu, build its hierarchy inside it, and then choose how it renders directly from the theme editor.

How Menus Are Built

You create a menu from the Menu section under Online Store, the same way as before. The difference is in how items are organized inside it.

Within a single menu, you can build a hierarchy of up to three levels:

  • Level 1 - Grandparent: The top-level menu items visible to customers at all times.
  • Level 2 - Parent: Sub-items nested under a grandparent item.
  • Level 3 - Child: Items nested under a parent item.

You can add items at each level to build out the full navigation structure you need.

LevelAlso CalledPosition in Hierarchy
Level 1GrandparentTop level - always visible
Level 2ParentOne level deep, under a grandparent
Level 3ChildTwo levels deep, under a parent

Each item at any level can be a collection, category, page, external link, or any other supported menu item type.

Supported Menu Item Types

When adding an item at any level of your menu, you can choose from the following types:

Menu Item TypeDescription
ItemsSelect a product or item to be shown on the menu.
CollectionsSelect a collection to be shown on the menu.
CategoriesSelect a category to be shown on the menu.
PagesSelect a page to be shown on the menu.
External LinkEnter a URL. Enable Open page in new tab if you want to redirect your customers to the URL linked here.
Blog PostsSelect a blog post to be shown on the menu.
TextEnter a simple Text to be shown on the menu.

Managing Your Menus

Each menu in your list has three actions available:

  • Edit - Open the menu to add, reorder, or remove items at any level.
  • Mark as Default - Sets this menu as the primary menu for your online store. The default menu is what customers see as the main menu when they visit your store. Only one menu can be the default at a time.
  • Delete - Permanently removes the menu. The default menu cannot be deleted while it is active.

Using Non-Default Menus

You are not limited to one menu on your online store. Non-default menus can be picked selectively in the theme editor - several sections expose a menu setting that lets you choose any menu you have created. This allows you to, for example, display a different menu in a footer section or a promotional navigation bar, independent of the default menu.

Setting the Display Style in the Editor

Once your menu is created, you select it in the theme editor. From there, you can control how the hierarchy is rendered for customers by choosing one of two display styles:

  • Drill Down - Customers tap or click through each level sequentially, going deeper into the hierarchy one level at a time.
  • Mega Menu - All levels are expanded and displayed together in a wide panel, giving customers a full overview at a glance.

The same menu structure powers both display styles - you build the hierarchy once, and the editor setting determines how it appears on the online store.
